Discovering Mosses

Join our resident ecologist David Cockburn for an introductory event exploring the incredible world of mosses.

Mosses are descended from the first plants to colonise the Earth’s land-surfaces and today they play a crucial role in almost all ecosystems. They are found on soil, rocks and trees and are especially plentiful in moist environments – but are able to survive even when completely dried out. In the UK, there are over 1000 species and many are here at Broughton Sanctuary. We are very proud that we have recorded 115 species so far!

After a short presentation, we will walk around a woodland area to search for and examine a range of mosses, using hand lenses supplied. We will then return to Utopia with some samples and there will be an opportunity to examine them up close and see even more details with a stereo microscope.

This workshop is part of our programme of free community events supported by grant funding from White Rose Forest. Tickets are complimentary but with only 20 spaces available you will need to book now to secure your place.
