Ritual and Rest

This retreat is lovingly guided by experienced yogini and teacher Bess Shipside, co-curated with Avalon Wellbeing. Ritual and Rest Retreat is an inspired and nourishing offering of essential space to feel back into the bliss of simply being. Join us for a long weekend of revivifying yoga and meditations to honour the vibrant centre of our universe, the Sun, known in the tantric tradition as SURYA and embrace the gentle regenerative energy of the Moon, known as SOMA. Enjoy creative cleansing and artistic conjuring workshops, peaceful forest bathing,  delicious vibrant food and community connection.

Each day is a container for your unwinding explorations into the essential self: from tending to our hard working physical body to softening the subtle emotive layers of the heart. Together we will take time to enjoy twice daily dynamic yoga practices, suitable for all levels, inspired by SURYA & SOMA and the incredible elemental nature so present at the expansive Broughton Hall Estate.

Surya is the sanskrit name for the fiery metabolic centre of our universe - the SUN and Soma refers to the gentle yet potent regenerative essence of the MOON. With this ever present inspiration we will pay homage to our far away friends who light up the sky through dynamic morning Solar Yoga (activating and uplifting) and late afternoon Lunar Yoga (relaxing and introspective), exploring both pathways to rebalance and restore the body, mind and soul. Our Yoga practices will take place in The Nest, a cantilevered glass fronted studio with beautiful views of the surrounding nature. All mats and props are provided.

Saturday Workshop | Forest Bathing, Breath and Meditation

Nature is the best tonic and links us directly to the ancient yogis. Together we will take a mindful walk into the forest and enjoy the sounds of the birds and bees while exploring the current of our breath through calming Pranayama- yogic breathing practices. Pranayama has a direct effect on the mind and can deeply relax the nervous system opening us to greater levels of sensitivity and awareness. This will lead us into a serene guided meditation nestled amongst the trees.

Sunday Workshop | Creativity Meditation and Drawing

Connecting to our creative power & possibility through expressive mark making is a liberating and fun practice that all can enjoy. There is no need to be an artist! Drawing encourages us to become more observant, spontaneous and mindful- forging a direct relationship with the subject, landscape or sitter. Depending on the weather and collective feeling we will enjoy drawing from Yoga postures or the stunning landscape at Avalon. For many years Bess tutored drawing for the Royal Drawing Clubs and privately. All materials will be provided.

This retreat has been designed to give you a harmonious balance of active relaxation and time out for rest and quiet. Please enjoy connecting with the group and respect any need for your own or others sacred down time. Sometimes our schedule needs to be adapted to the needs of the collective and the environment - let us be in the flow!
