Introduction to Weaving Day Retreat

Saturday 21 September 2019

10am to 5.30pm

Spend a day slowing down whilst exploring the art of weaving with Joan Murray. Learn this wonderful craft in time for the darker nights approaching; autumn and winter present a wonderful time to explore creative projects.

Weaving is about creating cloth, traditionally using spun and unspun wools, cottons and linen yarns. Once you discover the simple process you can create small or large pieces playing with colour and texture.

Joan will demonstrate how to prepare and explore weave. It is a slow, meditative but very exciting way of working. Sharing discoveries and seeing how differently everyone relates to the technique is rewarding. Joan will also demonstrate braid making, wrapping and variations developed from basic plain weave.

This introductory course can be a way of discovering your own creativity and playful way of combining fibres, yarns with collected and cut fabrics. Joan will also share about weaving practices in other cultures and how weaving has developed over the years.

The day will finish with time to relax and enjoy Avalon's sublime Pool Suite; 20m indoor Clear Pool, Hydromassage Pool, Sauna and Steam Rooms.
