Avalon Life Club presents
'Wellbeing - Learning from Bhutan: A Land of Gross National Happiness'
A Special Event hosted by Broughton Sanctuary
with Karen Darke MBE (Paralympic Gold-medallist and Explorer) and His Eminence Khedrupchen Rinpoche of Bhutan
Sunday 19th November 2023
Arrival 2pm - End 4pm
Bhutan is a unique Himalayan kingdom, where happiness is measured over materialism, and where compassion is woven into the fabric of life.
Bhutan’s landscapes, cultures and traditions inspire transformational change. It is a Kingdom where progress is measured with Gross National Happiness rather than Gross National Product.
Bhutan is the only carbon negative country in the world, and has leading practices in sustainable tourism and compassionate conservation.
This event gives insight into this special Kingdom and its culture, exploring harmony and happiness.
His Eminence Khedrupchen Rinpoche founder of the Khedrup Foundation in Bhutan travels widely teaching the values of connecting inner wellbeing with environmental preservation.
Karen Darke MBE (PhD), Paralympic gold-medallist and explorer met Rinpoche when she and a small group who were 'exploring inner gold' shared time at Rinpoche’s monastery high in the Black Mountains of Bhutan.
‘Inner Gold’ is a concept developed by Karen through her surprising life journey and discovery of the alchemy of transforming challenge into opportunity, ‘mud’ into ‘gold’.

Avalon Wellbeing Centre
Avalon Wellbeing was conceived by Paris Ackrill and Roger Tempest to serve the inner voyage of mind, body, spirit, a return to source and, ultimately, a reason for being. With its dramatic expression of curves, colours and encoded crystals, Avalon’s biophilic design was the work of Yiangou Architects and interior designer Patrick Kinmonth.
Declared by Ruby Wax as “the coolest place I’ve ever been to’, it brings one-of-a-kind modern inspiration to an ancient setting.
As well as a swimming pool, sauna, steam room (hydromassage pool), state-of-the art studio spaces, personal training studios, crystal light bed and Somadome meditation pod, the Centre acts as the beating heart of residential retreats. Daily yoga and meditation sessions are available as well as events, workshops and an outstanding team of experienced therapists and healers. Experience everything from Acupuncture, Shamanic healing and psychotherapy to herbal medicine, trauma release, varying forms of bodywork and sound baths.
